According to Tashakkori and Teddlie (2010), this approach is variously referred to as quantitative and qualitative methods, multi-methods and mixed methodology. Creswell (2014) indicates that this approach is a relatively new methodology that originated in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Accordingly, the approach came from individuals from the fields of education, sociology, management and the health sciences (Teddie &Tashakkori, 2009).

The study adopted the mixed-methods approach. This tradition of research involves combining both quantitative and qualitative research and data in response to research questions or hypotheses in a single study. The research approach deals with analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data separately, comparing and contrasting both datasets and integrating the two to address the research problem. The methods employed for collecting and analyzing data need to be rigorously conducted.
