Benefits of Studying Past Papers
Studying past papers are a valuable part of exam preparation and help keep revision focused on important themes whilst practicing exam style questions.
Past exam papers are one of the most helpful tools available to prepare for both internal and external examinations as they provide students with practical insight into how the forthcoming exam paper is likely to look and the key themes or subject areas most likely to be covered. Before starting revision for a subject it is always worth taking time to seek out past papers.
1. Work on your time management
If it’s possible, it’s best to practice completing the paper under exam circumstances, find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. The benefits of completing the paper this way, is that you can work out how much time you will have for each question. You can even ask a parent, sibling or friend to act as an invigilator to tell you how much time you have left.
2. Get used to the structure of a paper and the language they use.
You’re probably already used to the vocabulary from learning in the classroom, but it’s good to get yourself familiarised with past papers so you know how everything is laid out and on exam day you don’t stress out over it.
In some exams, some extra information might be printed in the paper such as equations for sciences and mathematics, again it’s good to know where these will be in the paper.
Once you’ve done a couple of past papers you know the layout of the questions. Generally, the paper will start with lower mark questions and work up, but it’s good to know so that you don’t write an essay long answer for a 2 mark question and not have enough time for a 10 mark question later in the paper.
3. It Helps You to Understand the Exam Questions Style
Exam questions are presented in different formats. Some are multiple-choice questions, while others are in essay form. As a student, you need to familiarize yourself with these different formats to build your confidence.
Therefore, get past exam papers that will help you understand the different exam questions format. You will know how they are worded and interpret them to provide the correct answers. Besides, you will have a clue on exam-style for every subject. As a result, you will get into the exam room without fear.
4. It Sharpens Your Skills
The more you practice with past exam questions, the more you sharpen your skills. These papers help you to recall what you have been learning in your class. Besides, it allows you to apply the concepts you have been mastering during your study times.
Therefore, past exam papers are a perfect option in your revision for your upcoming exam. Source as many as you can and go through them. You can also ask for assistance from a tutor to get accurate answers.
5. They Prepare You Psychologically
Students usually have anxiety when exams are near. Their mind keeps thinking how the exams will look like and if they will get their best grades. Some end up being sick because they cannot manage the pressure within them.
However, you can overcome this by preparing your mind on what to expect. Past exam papers will help you to familiarize yourself with exam questions. As a result, you can have peace of mind because you know what you are likely to find in the exam. Do not get headaches and sleepless nights because you haven’t prepared your mind; find past exam papers to help you out.
