Effective learning requires good facilities where the students can study in silence and easily use all necessary resources. Every great school has a library with shelves filled with books and designated study areas. Not everything can be discovered by browsing through a book; therefore, the best educational institutions have at least one science laboratory that is fully equipped for preparing experiments in chemistry, physics or biology. When it comes to facilities for the students interested in math and computer science, a good school offers them well-prepared locations with access to relevant technologies and equipment. The best academic institutions also put stress on the artistic education of their students, providing them with spaces for development in drawing, painting and music.
However, some contemporary psychologists give little support to the idea that there are general modes of thought particular to each stage. They consider that several types of evidence indicate that children do not go through general stages of development. This evidence includes the unevenness in children’s development, (e.g., in successfully completing various types of ‘conservation’ task); the existence of child prodigies with very advanced abilities in a particular domain (such as mathematics); and emerging evidence that familiarity with specific context and background knowledge are key factors in successful learning. Rather, these psychologists argue, children develop a sophisticated repertoire of task-specific (or domain-specific) skills and strategies on the basis of “associations” among many similar or related experiences. In effect this is a form of complex “behaviorism”, which is the way we adapt to our environment. Which quality is the most important for students? We believe that the answer here is the opportunity to engage in activities after school, which is very beneficial for the mental and physical health of each pupil. The feature that all the best schools have is a vast range of extracurricular activities, which serve as the best opportunity to discover one’s interests, sometimes even outside the school community. Extracurricular activities at school include sports, art classes, language courses and subject-area clubs.
