Mwalimu Julius k. Nyerere – Revolutionary leader and First President of Tanzania
Tanzania’s history encompasses millennia of human settlement, followed by eras of Arab, Portuguese, and German influence, culminating in British colonial rule over Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Tanganyika gained independence in 1961, and Zanzibar in 1963, before they united on April 26, 1964, to form the United Republic of Tanzania under Julius Nyerere. Nyerere’s rule focused on African socialism (Ujamaa) before Tanzania transitioned to a multi-party democracy in the early 1990s.
