QUALITIES
OF A GOOD MUSLIM
1.
Truthfulness
Allah tells us in this week’s central ayah that
a beautiful reward is awaiting us for our good manners.
Feel
it: Speaking the truth is not always easy, especially if it can get you into
trouble. But think about this: you’ll feel much better after you’ve told the
truth— even if the consequence is blame or punishment— because you did
something for the sake of Allah.
Motivate
yourself: The Prophet said: Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and
righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he
becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to al-fujur [wickedness,
evil-doing], and al-fujur leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on
telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar. [Al-Bukharee]
2.
Humility
Being
humble means being open to others’ opinions and focusing on others’ needs.
Humility may not come easy to everyone, but it is a sign of strength and shows
that you are open to asking for help and learning. A humble person deals with
people with grace, compassion and care.
The
best way to achieve humility is to follow the example of Prophet Muhammad
(SAW), who lived humbly and taught his followers to do the same. He said, “Verily,
Allah (SWT) has revealed to me that you must be humble towards one another so
that no one wrongs another or boasts to another (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
Humility
is an overlooked trait that will not only help us value others but also will
help us to seek constructive feedback and grow.
3.
Kindness
The
world is troubled. There is chaos, crime, inequality, sorrow, and poverty. How
can you make a difference to another soul and lift them from their misery?
Displaying acts of kindness and compassion is an essential facet of
Islam.
Grant forgiveness to those who hurt you and make an effort
to pray for their well-being as well. Make dua for those you love. And most
importantly yourself. Pray your obligatory salah on time and grant yourself the
opportunity to be blessed by Allah in abundance. Create a space where your
heart is at ease.
4. Unshakable
trust in God
The
believers know fully well that everything -good or bad- comes to be by God’s
will. No matter how difficult a situation may be, a true believer will not
compromise his faith for a piece of cake. This is why God reassures the believer
in the following verses:
…And
whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to
get out (from every difficulty) .And He will provide him from (sources) he
never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will
suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a
measure for all things. — Qur’an 65[At-Talaq]:2–3
5. Conveyance
of the Message (Tablig)
Prophet
Muhammad SAW was sent by Allah to spread the teachings of Islam to all
humanity. With perseverance and sincerity, he delivered Allah’s message to
everyone, indiscriminately. A real-life example of the tablig trait is when he
faced various obstacles and challenges in spreading the message of Islam but
never gave up and continued to fight with great enthusiasm.
This
verse also reminds us to act tablig as Prophet Muhammad SAW did: “Invite
to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them
in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed
from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.” (QS.
An-Nahl: 125)
