Once the University of Bristol moved back to in-person exams after Covid 19, we had open-book exams. We allowed students to take in 4 pages of A4 notes with them to the exam and asked them to include their notes in their exam scripts. We found that many students did not know how to make effective notes for exams – we saw students reproducing the entire content of the course as small as possible or students bringing solutions to problem sheets or past papers.
We observed that while students who were getting 60% or more continued to receive similar marks, weaker students were getting worst marks on average. We think this is because students who did not know how to revise where spending a lot of time and effort making these notes at the cost of revising. They did not realise that the notes should be a by-product of their revision (and this may be a failure on our part for not teaching them this). Last year, we only allowed 1
