However, a further crucial outcome of Pask’s work was the recognition that thorough understanding of a topic usually requires a versatile approach, using aspects of both “holist” and “serialist” styles. Pask explains this in terms of learners gradually reaching full understanding through a “conversational” process in which they question and try out ideas on another person or on another part of their own mind. Full understanding is evident when the learner can explain the topic to himself or to another and apply the principles learned in a new situation.
