That represents the formal target understanding. The syllabus, however, has then to be interpreted by the teacher, and that interpretation depends on the teacher’s prior knowledge and experience, not just of the subject matter, but also of pedagogy. Those are the historical influences. Proximal influences come into play as the teacher constructs the specific object of study for the class. In doing so most effectively the teacher needs to take account of pupils’ previous learning and in an emotional climate conducive to learning.
