I’m a lecturer is pure mathematics, having done a course in Algebraic Number Theory where 80% of the mark came from a final exam, and a first year course where 90% of the mark came from a final exam. I will highlight that I’m no stranger to alternative assessment as I also ran a course called Mathematical Investigation that is 100% coursework (involving group work, presentations, research reports and peer marking).

Finally, I’m the Year 1 senior tutor within our school. This means that I have conversations with many students who need extra support regarding assessments in general; I get to see how anxious different students can be; I speak to students who end up failing exams; and to students who struggle with studies and transition to university life for what-ever reason. I should also point out that I’m aware that I know I’m privileged – I’m white, male-ish, not so young anymore, straight-passing. So while I have a glimpse of the variety of difficulties marginalised students face, I know I will never realise the true extend of the hardship they may endure.
