Before I get into the matter at hand, I thought it would be doo to explain my experiences with exams as this likely introduced some biases. I was one of those students who did not stress about exams – in fact, I stressed on the day we would receive results. I was good, but not excellent at exams – I’m prone to making silly mistakes, confusing words (and hence definitions) and finding it hard to proof read my work.
I’m a lecturer is pure mathematics, having done a course in Algebraic Number Theory where 80% of the mark came from a final exam, and a first year course where 90% of the mark came from a final exam. I will highlight that I’m no stranger to alternative assessment as I also ran a course called Mathematical Investigation that is 100% coursework (involving group work, presentations, research reports and peer marking). Finally, I’m the Year 1 senior tutor within our school.
