For this talk, I will consider both open-book and closed-book exams. I will touch upon oral exams at the end of the talk. Paola Iannone and Adrian Simpson did a survey of the assessment diet of 23 departments of mathematics in 2021 (following a previous similar survey they did in 2012) and found that closed-book exams is still the main form of assessment.
In two different studies in 2014, the same two researchers looked into maths students and academics’ preferences for assessment. Both set of groups, closed-book exam came top of the list. Open-book exams was a strong contender for students, but not so much for academics. With the change of landscape in the last 10 years, it would be interesting to see if the same results are reproduced. However, it is clear that closed-book exams benefits from the statusquo, but do they actually offer any benefits?
