Authentic and fair
While there are many skills we want our students to learn and display, such as mathematical communication skills, research skills, team-work skills etc, we want them to display problem solving skills and mathematical abilities. While there are many type of assessments where students can showcase their mathematical imagination and understanding (e.g., problem sheet, project, quizzes), exams takes place in a control environment. While I’m not claiming cheating can not take place, it is easier to assess student’s individual cognitive process via exams – it is not muddle up with collusion, usage of various resources (whether A.I. or library books).
Note that the later are still useful skills students should acquire and that we should assess them on! But the benefit of exams is that it test an individual’s problem solving and critical thinking skills (within mathematics). In fact, I want to argue that looking at an exam script allows you to see the raw thoughts of a student, and how they think – compared to problem sheets where they should be re-working on drafts until they have a well communicated set of solution.
